Proposal for a Continental Citizens Assembly on Water CCAW) in Penang, Malaysia in June 2008 for 50 participants

First of all, may I take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks to the Fondation Charles Leopold Mayer for supporting our World Citizens’ Assembly on water (WCAW) in Kuala Lumpur (1st Meeting in October 2005) and recently in Marseille (2nd meeting in November 2007). During our 2nd meeting in Marseille, one of the agreed proposals was for the “Water Allies” to organise Continental Citizens’ Assembly on Water (CCAW) in their continents/regions. For this reason, Water Watch Penang (WWP) is proposing to organize a CCAW in June 2008 in Penang, Malaysia. This meeting will be attended by 50 participants, with 30 Malaysians and 20 participants from across Asia and the Pacific and Oceania. For your information, Water Watch Penang has already successfully organized two previous events with support from FPH, viz. (i) “Meeting Water Challenges in the 21st Century, 20-24 January 1997 in Penang, Malaysia” and (ii) “World Citizens Assembly on Water (WCAW), Inaugural Meeting, Kuala Lumpur, 27-29 October 2005.” We have also helped organize the “2nd World Citizens Assembly on Water (WCAW) Meeting, Marseille, 5-7 November 2007.”

We strongly believe that the WCAW is a most innovative idea that is achievable if all of us put of hearts and minds, and total commitment to it. Please disseminate this message amongst your "water-colleagues" in Asia and the Pacific and ask them to contact me if they are interested in joining our CCAW. We will consider their interest and commitment when choosing our participants.  We thank you and look forward to your feedback.

Yours in water,

Professor Ngai Weng Chan
